February half-term at Ormesby Hall
Come rain or shine there'll be plenty of family fun during February half-term at Ormesby Hall. Venture indoors and follow the classic children's books trail, then enjoy some fresh air and embrace the outdoors spotting the new spring flowers popping up in the garden
Once upon a book
The Pennyman family have a huge collection of books in the house and attics, including classic tales of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Jungle Book and Hans Christian Anderson. To celebrate their love of books, this half term we want to share our love of reading with visitors.
Children can collect their once upon a book trail on arrival from the reception desk in the courtyard, then be on the look out for spaces in the house reflecting classic children's books. Can you find the bears chairs that Goldilocks tested, Jack's beanstalk or which bed is the wolf lying in wait for Little Red Riding Hood?
Along the way children need to collect paper finger puppets representing the characters, which they can use in the puppet theatre in the entrance hall and dress up as a favourite character.
Dare you enter the witch's kitchen to decorate your finger puppets and warm yourself by the stove, but watch out is that gingerbread I smell! Which story does this witch's kitchen belong to?
Would you like to try to grow your own beanstalk? In the courtyard join the team to plant a bean to take home and watch it grow tall. On Wednesday 20th February, 11am - 2pm, join us for a storyelling session.
Start to get outdoors in 2019
Can you spot any emerging spring flowers on the spring spotter trail? The garden will be filled with new snowdrops and other spring bulbs, with the daffodils also starting to sprout up from the ground. Get muddy making a messy meal in the mud pie kitchen and be on the lookout for some tempting puddles.
Fancy a winter walk? Then put on your walking boots or wellies for a family walk around the estate to see Ormesby Hall in it’s winter glory as you cross the farmland.
Inside the hall
In the old servant’s wing the surprise discovery of model railways and Thomas the tank engine always delights young visitors who are fascinated by the running trains. They can even take control and push the buttons to control Thomas and his friends on the interactive layout. Families can get creative and enjoy some playtime in the new family space or relax with a book in the second hand bookshop.
Whatever the weather this February half-term Ormesby Hall has plenty to do inside and out.
