Join our team of volunteers and find out more about life 'below' stairs' on Costumed Encounters. Dressed as Georgian servants, they'll tell you more about what life was like as a servant at Petworth and carry out some of the duties servants of the time might have done.

Depending on volunteer availablity there are some interesting activities to explore 'below stairs' during Costumed Encounters.

As you walk towards the Servants' Quarters you may be greeted by one of the team who will explain what's on that day so you won't miss a thing.

Proper etiquette would have been paramount when hosting polite society at Petworth House and this would have included the servants as well. While the the weather is warm you might meet some of the Still Room Maids outside making posys. Discover more about their important role and what life was like for women at Petworth House.

Inside you might find the Chef in his sitting room planning the meals for the week or the Steward beavering away in the Estate Office.
