Summer holiday fun at Powis Castle
Families with children and grandchildren, of all ages will find there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained at Powis Castle this summer. Come rain or shine there's always something new to discover.
In the Garden
In 1939 the Ashford Welsh Girls School was evacuated to Powis Castle from Middlesex. Explore as the students would have done by getting muddy digging for victory, trying out the balance beam, or having a go at vintage games such as giant noughts and crosses.
Don’t forget to collect a summer garden trail too! Find the 8 school ties hidden around the garden and use the clues on them to work out which student from the Welsh Girls School competed in each Sports Day event.
In the Castle
Step back in time and hear the voices of the Castle, the family and the school girls as they reveal an unexpected Second World War story of gym classes in the Ballroom, midnight feasts, picnicking on the roof, and the exciting discovery of a hidden room which glittered with golden artefacts.
Explore the dorm room and common room on the castle’s newly opened second floor. Then, in the cellars and Old Kitchen, step into the school’s reinstated prep room and classroom where you can get involved in classroom activities, games, crafts, and art lessons.
As you explore, see if you can collect all the clues you’ll need to complete the castle’s Summer Treasure Hunt and earn your place in the ‘Elephant Dorm’.
A summer of events
We have action packed events programme to keep little ones entertained too:
Mondays - Dance sessions on the Great Lawn, 11am-4pm*
Let off some steam this summer by joining our professional dance teacher on the Great Lawn. You don’t need to be a dancer to join in; just give it a go and have fun!
Wednesdays – Storytelling sessions in the Formal Garden, 10.30am*
Enjoy a moment of peace as you and your family listen to one of our children’s stories and journey into a fictional world. New stories will be told each week, followed by colouring activities in the Garden Coffee Shop.
Thursdays – Nature days with the RSPB, 11am-3pm*
The RSPB will be at Powis with a whole host of exciting activities. From making bird feeders and bug hotels, to identifying insects and birds, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
Fridays – Powis Sports Day, 12-3pm*
Compete with family and friends in some good old fashioned Sports Day events. From wheelbarrow races and sprint, to egg and spoon races and the relay, there’s plenty to try. Who will reign champion in your family?
