Winter days out with the family at Quarry Bank

Visitors on the mill meadow at Quarry Bank in winter

Enjoy a family day out at Quarry Bank this winter. Head out on a frosty walk through the estate, follow the reindeer trail through the winter gardens, discover festive traditions from the past and warm up with hot chocolates.

Family on the reindeer trail

Follow the winter reindeer trail

Grab those hats and scarves, pull on your boots and head out with the family on our winter reindeer trail. Follow the trail through the winter gardens and count how many reindeer you can spot to be in for a chance of winning a special reindeer prize. (Until 5 January). And after a frosty walk, you can warm up with hot chocolates topped off with marshmallows.

Family on a snowy winter walk

Blow away the cobwebs on a frosty walk

Whether it's getting the whole family together for the annual Boxing Day walk, or taking a bit of time out after the festivities and soaking in a favourite view, winter is the perfect time to head out and explore the estate at Quarry Bank. Look out for winter birds including robins, blue tits, red wings and fieldfare. Or why not have a go at some our 50 Things to Do Before You're 11 3/4? Go welly wandering (No. 6), have fun with sticks (No. 12), go on a wintry adventure (No. 15) or play pooh sticks (No. 19).

Family exploring the apprentice at christmas

Discover festive traditions from the past

Step back in time to see the mill owners’ Georgian home decked with festive decorations, then head over to the Apprentice House to experience what Christmas would have been like for the children who worked in the mill. For the apprentices who rarely had a treat or even a day off, a cup of tea and a slice of current loaf was a real luxury to be enjoyed on Christmas day. (Until 5 January).

Warm up with hot chocolates (with marshmallows of course!)

After a frosty walk, warm up with hot chocolates and all the trimmings, or choose from a delicious menu of freshly prepared meals. From light snacks to hearty meals, and with a children’s menu for younger visitors with smaller appetites, there’s something for everyone.

The winter retail collection (wool blankets)

Not on the high street

Winter has arrived and so have our latest collections, including locally made artisan collections, unique homewares, garden essentials and tasty treats. You can also shop from our unique range of Quarry Bank fabrics, woven inside the mill on the heritage looms and printed locally in a variety of patterns, including - for the first time ever – a special winter print. And don't forget to bag yourself a bargain from the winter sale!
