The Quarry Bank Project 2015-2020 

Over the past four years Quarry Bank has been at the centre of one of the largest projects in the National Trust’s history. New areas have been restored and for the first time ever visitors can now explore the complete industrial heritage site at Quarry Bank. Discover how this £9.4 million project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and thousands of generous donors, has transformed how you experience and learn about Quarry Bank.

Bringing the Archive to life 

There are lots of weird and wonderful items on show at Quarry Bank, but did you know that there are thousands more behind closed doors? Our Collections and Archive team are working to make more of the objects available for you to see online and in person.

The Quarry Bank collection is diverse, containing an extensive archive and collection, thousands of documents and objects from the last 250 years. Among these are a collection of machines and apparatus from the mill’s textile testing room, a small area in the office wing of the mill where yarn and cloth were tested.

The First World War at Quarry Bank

‘A counter-attraction to the public house’ Discovering the Workers’ Library at Quarry Bank 

Literary life at Quarry Bank tends to be associated with the mill-owning Greg family. But hidden within the collection lies the Workers' Library, a set of hundreds of books which were enjoyed by the mill workers and residents of Styal village in the early twentieth century. We've been discovering the secrets of the Workers' Library and its readers in collaboration with the University of Manchester.
