Helen Mortimer, a local artist specilaising in silk painting and who has successfully run a number of workshops brings "From Spencer to Abstraction" a silk painting workshop. In this session you will start with a talk and tour of our chapel to learn about how it came about and look at the stunning 19 canvasses that Spencer created in response to his service in the First World War as a medical orderly. Importantly these images do not show the horror of war, but of the everyday - the scrubbing, cleaning, washing and administering to the sick, and it was these activities which became Spencer's salvation.
After the chapel tour and inspired by the chapel and its paintings you will create your own sketch guided by Helen who will then show you how to transfer your chosen design on to a piece of silk You will then use gutta for the outline of your sketch and finally paint the image using the glorious colours and hues you will have seen in the chapel.
