Becoming a gardening volunteer at Cragside

A gardening volunteer trims bushes beside a pathway

Whether you’re green fingered or a gardening novice wanting to gain new skills, you’re welcome to join the gardening team at Cragside.

Got a bit of time on your hands? Perhaps only one day free a fortnight? Like the sound of spending your day in a Victorian formal garden, breathtaking Pinetum and one of Europe’s largest rock garden? Becoming a gardening volunteer might be for you.

You’ll be part of a close-knit, friendly team, and will be expected to undertake various practical roles to keep the garden looking its best.

What does the day in the life of gardening volunteer look like? Senior Gardener George explains more:

No two days can be the same here in the gardens, from the variation in the seasons & weather to all the different tasks and challenges we face, as you never can quite tell when Mother Nature will send you a curveball!

Whether you enjoy the almost meditative work of weeding and chatting to visitors, or helping with grass cutting and other machinery work, or the delicate work of propagation, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

We offer flexible hours and days of volunteering.  Maybe you can only spare a couple of hours once a fortnight or have a couple days free a week. If you need to stand back from life and take stock in the outdoors enjoying everything nature has to offer, we would love to hear from you.
