The history of Hatfield Forest is associated with a number of significant figures who each had an impact on where we are today - our Forest Heroes - in no particular order: Lancelot "Capability" Brown, Oliver Rackham, Edward North Buxton, and members of the Houblon family - Jacob Houblon III, Laetitia Houblon, John Archer Houblon and Lady Alice Archer Houblon.
We have recently uncovered exciting evidence that Capability Brown prepared a small scheme for altering the lake and lakeside area.

The special nature of the forest was recognised nearly 100 years ago, when it was saved by a wonderful act of generosity by one of our earliest conservationists.
The Houblon family owned Hatfield Forest for nearly two hundred years and were responsible for the lake and other landscape features in the central area.
