Spring gardens in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire

Spring is a wonderful time to visit the gardens we look after as they awaken into bloom. Every week there's a new flower peeping up through the soil.

Gardens in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire

Here's your guide to spring flowers in Bucks, Berks and Oxfordshire. If you love daffodils, head to Cliveden, Waddesdon and Ascott to see bobbing yellow heads as far as the eye can see. For fans of the more delicate yellow flower, the primrose, head to Hughenden. It was Disraeli's favourite flower and he planted lots. For cherry blossom, you can't beat Greys Court. New cherry trees have been planted in the last couple of years and we're hoping for a good showing of blossom this year. Also at Greys Court and Nuffield Place, the magnolia is magnificent (frost allowing). More formal mixed spring bulb displays can be seen in the parterres at Cliveden, Waddesdon and Hughenden. Greys Court also has a lovely patchwork display of spring bulbs which echoes Lady Brunner's patchwork quilt in the house. Snakeshead fritillaries are an intriguing flower and there's a whole meadow of them at Stowe in April. Waddesdon has a wonderful show of tulips in April/May in the Aviary Garden and appropriately enough, Ascott's Dutch Garden is another good place for tulips. Bluebells in late April / early May can be seen in carpets at Basildon Park, Cliveden and Hughenden.

Dazzling daffodils at Cliveden

Daffodils are at their best in March at Cliveden. There are more than 20 different varieties of naturalised narcissus across the estate, from the robust Narcissus 'Mount Hood' in the Water Garden to the delicate Narcissus minor near Blenheim Pavilion. This year the Long Garden is planted with more than 16,000 daffodils, making for an impressive colour block spectacle as you wander through the beds.
