Adventures in Asia: a socialite abroad at Polesden Lacey

A 1920s postcard of the public gardens in Pathein

During the winter, when it was dark and cold here in England, Mrs Greville would often travel to warmer climes. Throughout the 1920s and 30s, Maggie travelled extensively around Asia, visiting friends and seeing the sights.

From January to May 2018, we will be celebrating Maggie’s journeys around this fascinating continent, in our programme Adventures in Asia: a socialite abroad. Here is a taste of what you can enjoy around the property.

In the house

Visit the house and discover how the elite travelled in the early 20th Century – what luxuries did Maggie enjoy while she was sailing to Asia? Where did she stay while she was there, and what events did she attend? Who did she meet?

The house will be brought to life with the sights and sounds of Maggie’s Asian adventures.

Around the gardens

Outside, the house borders will feature classic blue and white blooms inspired by Chinese pottery. Explore the formal gardens as they come to life and discover which flowers were introduced to England from Asia.

At weekends during the winter and every day from April, join a garden tour to learn more about the history of the formal gardens and the beautiful plants within it.

Taste and take away

Taste the delicacies of Asia in the Granary Cafe, where our chefs have whipped up some yummy treats. Or you can take home some beautiful Asian-inspired souvenirs from the shop, including books, homeware and plants.

Adventures in Asia: a socialite abroad runs from 5 January – 3 May 2018. Take a look at more highlights of Adventures in Asia below.
