The Interior at Standen House and Garden

Standen exemplifies a creative masterpiece, a collaboration between Philip Webb, Morris & Co. and the Beales. The Beales wanted a comfortable retreat for weekends and holidays in the country. It still has the warm, welcoming feel of the home they planned. Standen is Margaret Beale’s vision of an artistic home, comfortable rather than luxurious, high quality but not at all ostentatious. She planned the decorating and furnishing, creating distinctive interiors that still reflect that vision. Margaret combined wallpapers, fabrics and furniture from Morris and Company and other suppliers, with antiques, Eastern carpets, Chinese and Japanese porcelain and cherished family possessions.
