From the rare and unusual to common and frequent visitors to the Estate Wimpole has a great cross section of wildlife, flora and fauna throughout the year.

We have a sightings book kept at the Garden Gate and Ticket Office.  If you spot anything unusual let us know.


  • Thousands of Cowslips near the Gothic Tower
  • March hares on the farmland
  • Barn Owls hunting over the meadows
  • Orange Tip and Brimstone Butterflies
  • St Georges Mushrooms in the pasture
  • Swallows and House Martins
  • Grass snakes sunning themselves
  • Solitary bees and wasps feeding on the Spring blooms


  • Hay meadows in full bloom with Orchids, Knapweeds, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Clovers, Yellow Rattle, Field Scabious, Meadow Vetchling, Common Cranesbill
  • Butterflies include Meadow Brown Ringlet, Marbled White, Common Blue
  • Birds in the park include Patridge, Green Woodpecker, Buzzard and Marsh Harrier.  Across the farmland Yellowhammers, Goldfinch, Linnet, Sparrows and Reed Buntings. 
  • Bats, badger and fox cubs at dusk



  • Fungi including Deadman's Fingers, Candle Snuff  and Chicken of the Woods
  • Bats in their thousands around the lake
  • Birds include migrant Short Eared Owls, House Martins and Swallows getting ready to fly home
  • Blackberries, plums, wild apple and rosehips
  • Flowering ivy, full of insects, bees, wasps and butterflies like the Comma Red Admiral



  • Birds include Fieldfare, Tree Creepers, Nuthatch, Linnet, Goldfinch, Yellowhammers
  • Murmurations of Starlings in the South Avenue
  • Muntjac Deer and Hare
  • Snowdrops in late winter
