West Kennet Avenue

West Kennet Avenue is approximately 4,600 years old, built in the Neolithic period at the same time as the Avebury stone circles were raised.  The stones are thought to have originally linked the stone circle at Avebury to The Sanctuary around 2.5km away.

Today, the stones remain standing for the first 800m leading from the stone circle and you can enjoy wandering along this ancient monument.

Recent excavations have revealed the presence of Neolithic occupation on the West Kennet Avenue, most likely dated to before the erection of the stones.  In due course, analysis of the many finds from the excavations (2013 -2015) will tell us more.
