From Plot to Plate at Clumber Park

The apple orchard at Clumber Park

The stunning orchards in the Walled Kitchen Garden at Clumber Park provide more than just visual beauty - the fruits are used in our dishes in the Garden Tea House and the Café too.

There are many ingredients sourced from the Walled Kitchen Garden for our dishes in the Garden Tea House and the Cafe, and the fruits from the orchard are among the most important.

Head Chef Rob works closely with our Head Gardener to get the best seasonal ingredients and access to ‘outlawed vegetables’ that you just won’t see in the supermarket, and to create our daily garden inspired salads, puddings and lunch specials.

The orchards form part of this, and the exquisite fruits from the beautiful blossoming apple and pear trees ensure that our dishes are fresh, tasty and delightful.

The apple orchards have been a hugely important part of the Walled Kitchen Garden since the times of the Dukes of Newcastle. They were carefully maintained to the highest possible ducal standards by a hardy team of gardeners to ensure the harvest was among the best in the country.

In fact the apples were so delicious, that the Dukes would order boxes full of them to be delivered via train to their home in London on Christmas Day!

The gardens team still use traditional growing methods today from the times of the Dukes.

As well as our nationally recognised local apples collection, our Walled kitchen garden is home to 130 different types of Rhubarb which has been awarded national collection status. Our chefs love to show this off in a range of rhubarb inspired dishes on our menu, and these compliment the apples from our apples superbly.

Be sure to try our sumptuous apple and rhubarb crumble to finish of your Sunday roast, it's a truly unique and flavoursome dish not to be missed. Every time you do, it helps us to look after and maintain these 130 species of rhubarb.
