Tramper hire at Pentire

Visitor using a Tramper mobility scooter to explore the headland

If you find walking difficult you can still enjoy exploring Pentire headland thanks to the all-terrain Tramper which is now available to hire. It’s been supplied by our friends at the not-for-profit initiative Countryside Mobility. The Tramper can be booked by emailing pentire@nationaltrust.org.uk.

What makes a Tramper different from other wheelchairs

The Tramper is an electric all-terrain mobility scooter designed specifically to cover rough ground and grass safely. It can go up and down slopes, over bumps and tree roots, through shallow puddles, mud and soft ground.

Who can use it?

The Tramper is for use by anyone who struggles with walking. The scooter is easy to use (so don’t worry if you’ve never used a mobility scooter before) and offers the chance to explore much of the headland.

With a top speed of four miles an hour it can keep pace with the briskest walking companion.

Where can I go using the Tramper?

The visitor facilities at Pentireglaze (where the main car park and toilets are located) are wheelchair, buggy and mobility scooter friendly. This is also where to collect the Tramper and be given guidance on how to use it. There is a restored orchard which has accessible paths and picnic tables.

Three designated Tramper routes take you out onto the headland, providing an opportunity to enjoy clifftop views of the Rumps and over Port Quin Bay towards Doyden Castle, with Tintagel in the distance. A fourth route finishes at Pentireglaze Haven (Baby Bay).

Pentire is a working farm and so please be aware that, due to livestock grazing, not all routes may be available during your visit. We may also suggest avoiding certain paths after periods of very wet weather. National Trust staff will be on hand to offer clear guidance on the routes you may use, and free maps are provided to assist you.

How to hire the Tramper

The Tramper is available to use most days from April (Thursday to Sunday Feb-Mar 2022) when we have welcome staff. Due to staffing there will be one booking per day between 10.30am and 3pm.

To use the Tramper you’ll need to become a member of Countryside Mobility for insurance purposes. This costs £10.00 per year or £2.50 for a two week ‘taster membership’. To save you time on the day we suggest beginning the sign up process before your visit if possible, but our staff can also help with doing that at Pentire.

On arrival at Pentireglaze, you’ll be taken through the final stage of becoming a member. You’ll be introduced to the Tramper controls by a trained member of staff and given the opportunity to have a practise, so you feel confident that you can safely control the Tramper before setting off.

Once you’ve signed up for Countryside Mobility membership this then allows you access to nearly 50 Countryside Mobility locations around South West England – and they’re hoping to add even more.

  • Booking is essential.  Please email pentire@nationaltrust.org.uk and include a telephone number and email address so we can confirm availability of the Tramper. The Tramper is available to hire when we have staff on site (most days from April to October and weekends over the winter). Regrettably we’re not currently able to take bookings over the phone.
  • Bookings can be made well in advance or a minimum of 3 days before your planned visit; but please do cancel if you change your mind so we can free up your slot to others.
