Spend a weekend in North Yorkshire

It's not surprising if you've felt the lure of North Yorkshire's charms for it's truly God's own country. If you're wondering how to make the most of your time, read on to find out what to do on your visit whether you're here for a weekend, a week or longer.

North Yorkshire is a walker's haven with rambling trails crossing the countryside and the undulated roads are simply made for cycling. If it's history you're after you can spend countless days walking among ruins, museums and historic landscapes. Whether it's a weekend or longer there's so much for you to get stuck into.

Places to explore: Ripon and beyond

Fountains Abbey sits on the edge of Nidderdale AONB and the Yorkshire Dales. Spend an afternoon wandering the shops of Ripon and visit it's cathedral. There's much to explore, including nearby market town Masham with it's renowned breweries. Spot the White Horse from Thirsk. Enjoy a cliff top stroll or hire bikes from Sutton Bank for a great view over the picturesque North Yorkshire countryside. If you're looking for a walking or cycling holiday there's no better place with winding country roads and undulating trails with breathtaking views. For some woodland walking try the Woodland Trust's Hackfall Woods at Grewelthorpe. Designed by the same man who designed Studley Royal water garden, you can spend a good few hours exploring this carefully landscaped woodland. Ripon and Fountains Abbey appear alongside Nidderdale Area Of Natural Beauty (AONB) on OS 298 (1:25,000) Nidderdale map.
