A new garden is coming...

Ever since the National Trust started acquiring Gibside estate in 1974, piece by piece, it has been on a journey, and now we're embarking on the next chapter of the story.
To help, we're pleased to welcome award-winning garden designer, Diarmuid Gavin, to the team who is going to create a vibrant and contemporary garden design for Gibside.
It's 18th century surroundings meets 21st century innovation.
Mainly concentrating on the Walled Garden, the design will bring a new focus to the historic landscape, with scope for further touches throughout the pleasure grounds and wider estate.
George Bowes’ original vision for the estate, with spectacular views and ‘wow’ experiences, was cutting edge for its time. Diarmuid’s pioneering approach will help us to continue to celebrate that ground-breaking tradition at Gibside.
" I'm very excited about bringing Gibside’s story to life. Working alongside the National Trust, I hope to build and plant a garden which embodies the engaging nature of the people of the area and create a space which is relevant to how we view and use public gardens today."
An internationally renowned garden designer, Diarmuid is known for his ingenuity and creativity. With a career spanning over 20 years, he has continued to push boundaries most notably at Chelsea Flower Show, showcasing fun and evocative gardens.
" The National Trust cares about tradition, culture and heritage. I appreciate its role as custodian and guardian of places, architecture and, in particular the history of design and craft of our gardening heritage. I am looking forward to delving deeper into the history and heritage of Gibside, meeting the people who care for, and who use the garden, as well as enticing visitors to explore and engage with Gibside’s landscape."
So, with summer in full swing and the gardens in bloom, it's the perfect opportunity to have a stroll around the Walled Garden, relax on the deck chairs and bring a picnic.
Remember, if you're out for a stroll don't be surprised if you spot Diarmuid wandering around too.

Join us in the Walled Garden on Sunday 18 September from 11am until 4pm for the first Gibside Grow show. We'll be celebrating all things horticultural - quirky vegetables, homemade food, craft and even some fun and friendly competitions.
Don't let this small enclosure fool you. During the 18th Century it most likely would have been frowned upon to walk anywhere other than the path. Not now, it's here to be enjoyed, explored and loved.
Gibside’s Walled Garden is blossoming in every sense of the word. Constantly evolving and growing, it’s got quite a story to tell.
While visiting Gibside, it can be difficult to imagine the carriages bringing guests for dinner parties, horses being exercised along the Avenue and family weddings taking place in the Chapel. There's much more to this Georgian estate than meets the eye...
See what events we have planned for summer or explore Gibside for longer on Friday evenings.
