    • A cosy cottage with comfy window seats and a woodburner in the sitting room’s inglenook.

    • In Lacock, a quaint English village with traditional pubs, timber-framed cottages and quirky shops.

    • Centuries of history are on the doorstep, and Bath and Stonehenge are within driving distance.

20 Church Street is a historic cottage on the edge of the pretty village of Lacock. It’s a grade-II listed house, with some parts dating back to the 15th century and others modernised over time. The village was built around the spired church that overlooks the cottage, and most rooms have a window seat where you can enjoy the view.

Outside, a rose climbs the front wall and a grassed garden wraps around the cottage. Looking at 20 Church Street from the garden gate, you might recognise it as the Potters' family home from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001). Lacock’s streets and buildings look much as they did 200 years ago, so the village and abbey have become favourite locations for film and television series like Downton Abbey and Wolf Hall.

You’ll have free entry to National Trust places, including Lacock Abbey, a nunnery-turned-Tudor house, just a short stroll away. Here, you’ll be transported back in time, walking in the footsteps of Queen Elizabeth I in the cloister – a rare relic of medieval monastic architecture. More recently, William Henry Fox Talbot captured the first surviving photographic negative at the abbey, detailed in Lacock’s Fox Talbot Museum of photography. The money you spend on your holiday will contribute to the care of this special place.

Lacock is between the southern tip of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the North Wessex Downs. Bath is only 15 miles away, while Bristol and Stonehenge can be reached in less than an hour’s drive.

Groups of up to 11 can book to stay at both 20 Church Street and 2 High Street (sleeps five), a 15th-century cottage with a traditional interior, just a short walk away.
