On the rugged coast or in the rolling countryside of the Dales or North York Moors, our holiday cottages in Yorkshire are as varied as the landscapes they're surrounded by.
A week-long holiday in North Yorkshire, staying at Fountains Abbey
Day 1
Arrival
Get settled in at your cottage and stretch your legs on a wander through the Fountains Abbey grounds. As a guest staying in a Fountains Abbey cottage, you can explore the estate after visitors have gone home.
Head to York to wander the medieval city walls and minster, and explore cobbled streets to find quirky shops in the Shambles.
Discover the city's many famous attractions – including Treasurer's House, where you'll have free entry – and stop for a snack to try a Yorkshire pudding wrap.
Scramble over and through dramatic rock structures at Brimham Rocks, which were formed millions of years ago. It’s a short drive from Fountains Abbey or an 8-mile walk through the Nidderdale National Landscape.
Put on your walking boots and explore the Yorshire Dales. Popular spots like Malham Cove are about an hour’s drive away. For a challenging walk, head a little further into the Dales for the Horse Head Moor and Deepdale walk, which has views across the Three Peaks. Experienced hikers might want to tackle one or more of these famous peaks – Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside.
There's also the historic market town of Skipton, where you can take a boat tour on the canal, wander market stalls or just take in the charming cobbled streets.
Enjoy a spa day in Harrogate and round the day off in a lovely café, bar or restaurant. Or rent a row boat in Knaresborough and have coffee and ice cream by the river.
Both towns are within a 30-minute drive of the cottages at Fountains Abbey.
Head to the rugged North York Moors for plenty of walks and quaint towns like Helmsley.
If your holiday isn’t complete without the sea, continue on to the coast – Staithes, Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay are all less than a couple of hours away.
On your last day, stay close to your cottage and explore more of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. As well as the abbey ruins, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has water gardens, over 300 deer in the deer park and riverside valley walks.
You'll have free entry here and to other National Trust places while staying with us.

Cottages near Robin Hood's Bay
Robin Hood's Bay is a 17th-century fishing village where you can still grab fresh fish when the catch is brought in. For your stay, choose from three cottages up on the nearby cliffs - great for birdwatching and stargazing. Take the coast path and explore the area on foot, or there's the Cinder Track cycle route which follows the old Whitby to Scarborough railway line.
Choristers' House is a grand home in the deer park at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are several other holiday cottages at Fountains Abbey, so you can meet up with family and friends.
