Family activities in Surrey

Building a den from sticks, collecting sweet chestnuts and climbing a gnarly old tree. These are some of the simple pleasures you can get stuck into at our places in Surrey this autumn.

This autumn come for a family walk at the Devil's Punch Bowl, Box Hill or Claremont Landscape Garden. Or clamber on the natural play areas at Winkworth Arboretum or Hatchlands Park.

The highlight of the season is an illumination event at Polesden Lacey. Ignite is brought to you at Polesden Lacey by Raymond Gubbay Ltd (Sony Music).

At Winkworth Arboretum during our busy autumn season (27 Sept to 21 Nov) advanced booking is needed to guarantee entry.

Experience Ignite: a brand new after-dark experience taking place from Fri, 22 Oct 2021 – Sun, 7 Nov 2021 in the garden at Polesden Lacey. Step into an enchanting landscape that will fill you with wonder and enjoy moments of reflection and playful discovery along this brand new illuminated trail.

The wild woods of Winkworth are ripe for family adventures this summer. Head out on a trail and, in amongst the trees, discover a secret place where we've carved stairways, hollows and hidey-holes into trees. Our natural play area is all yours to explore.

There are lots of places to play at Polesden Lacey. Why not try out our fun giant swings, which hang beautifully from the strong boughs of our beech trees. Climb on the natural climbing frames by Admirals Walk, play hide and seek in the woodland or build a den in the woods. For even more adventure visit Squirrel's Corner, hidden amongst the trees in the garden. Normal admission applies.

With two natural play areas and ‘50 Things to do before you’re 11 ¾’ nature themed challenges, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure. Throughout the season, families are invited to enjoy an autumn amble around the gardens and discover new views. Pictures frames hung around the garden will highlight the best seasonal colours and features of the garden.

Let the kids loose in the natural adventure play area, complete with treehouse, willow tunnels and balance beams. During October half term follow a trail on chalkboards around the parkland identifying unusual and interesting trees. Celebrate your favourite thing about autumn by adding your thoughts to the Leaf Wall. Pick up a free packet of pumpkin seeds with advice on how to grow them, alongside recipe cards to take home.

Hindhead Commons and the Devil's Punch Bowl 

With so much wide open space, the Devil's Punch Bowl is a great place for a family walk. Experience true wildness on a hilly walk through the centre of the Punch Bowl. Or bring the scooters and the dog and saunter along to the viewpoint and back. There are icecreams and hot chocolates back at the cafe and even a natural play area to clamber on.

Box Hill  

Box Hill is the perfect place to discover a family walk and explore the Surrey Hills. Our Natural Play Trail is a two-mile level walk and a great chance to play in the woods. There are lots of trees and structures to climb on. Specially for autumn, families can discover more about the many owls which live and visit Box Hill on the self-guided owl trail.
