Plas Newydd gardens open for February half term

Good news, the Plas Newydd gardens, The Old Dairy Restaraunt and Shop are all set to open earlier this year for February half term, despite damage suffered over the winter. However, plans to also open the mansion house have suffered a setback.

Like many places in North Wales, Plas Newydd suffered severe wind and water damage at the hands of storms Desmond, Eva and Frank at the end of 2015.

Although the teams managed to clear the woods and gardens ready for the first school holidays of the year, the effect of the storms have taken their toll on plans to open the house.

Boxing day floods

While the house was tucked up for winter, behind the scenes an ongoing project was under way to upgrade the house's wiring and plumbing - but on Boxing Day, all plans were put on hold as flooding in the basements caused the power to fail.

Barbara Stanley, who lives and works at Plas Newydd explains:

“We’d seen rain coming down constantly for what seemed like weeks but nothing compared to the amount of rain that fell in just a few days over Christmas.

“We were all ready to celebrate with family on Boxing Day when the power failed. We went down to the basements to investigate and were amazed with what we saw. There was water up to waist height and it was still gushing in”.

“We have robust procedures for this type of eventuality but even so it was still so heartening to see volunteers and staff give up their family time at Christmas to help us fill sandbags and help stem the flow of water.

“It was a very testing time, especially for us who live here, but knowing that there were so many people ready to pitch in and help really gave us a boost.”

Whilst the flooding was limited to our mansion basement the water caused irreparable damage to our mansion's electricity supply.

Fortunately, none of the collection or building fabric was seriously damaged but the loss of electrical power for 6 weeks whilst a new mains switch panel was rebuilt has delayed getting the house ready for visitors.

The good news is that, now that the damage has been repaired, the planned re-servicing work to keep this special place safe for future generations is well underway and Plas Newydd will once again open its grand doors to visitors on the 12th March 2016.

Half term opening

During Feburary half term the gardens at Plas Newydd, the Old Dairy restaurant and Shop will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm.
