The second-hand bookshop at Polesden Lacey

A young boy wearing a hat looks through a book

You'll find the second-hand bookshop at Polesden Lacey in a secluded corner on the west side of the mansion. It's a great place to while away a bit of time during a visit. Delve into shelves of books to discover a world of preloved stories and non-fiction for all ages.

We have a large selection of fiction and a wide variety of non-fiction including cookery, gardening, history, travel and much more. We also have a lovely children’s corner.

The second-hand bookshop opened in 2016. Since then it has helped raise tens of thousands of pounds for conservation work at Polesden Lacey.

All the books found in our second-hand bookshop are kindly donated by our visitors and volunteers. Books donated include all manner of gems including collectable books, some modern but often old, sometimes rare and occasionally signed by an author.

The library is one of the most welcoming of the reception rooms at Polesden Lacey. The books here are from a combination of libraries. Some are from Polesden Lacey and Charles Street libraries. Other volumes belonged to the servant's social club, once located in Stable Courtyard.

" ...it's like dipping into a treasure trove."
- Gillian, bookshop volunteer

Our books are valued individually by one of our volunteers, Gillian, a former librarian. Gillian's role at Polesden Lacey is quite unique. She loves books and happily spends many hours combing through bags and boxes of donations.

Our second-hand book sales contribute hugely to our fundraising efforts and our collectable books can be sold at anything from £10 to over £100. In 2019 a book about The Titanic even sold at auction for £160.

Why not pay the second-hand bookshop a visit next time you're at Polesden Lacey?
