Newtopia at Acorn Bank

Great crested newt on the beach

Acorn Bank's population of Great Crested Newts, a species that is in decline across Europe, are the stars of the show this spring. With Newtopia events across April and May, you have the chance to bring the whole family and meet the largest of Britain's native newt species as they emerge from their overwintering sites and head to the ponds.

Population Surveys

Every Friday throughout April, you can help with our rangers with their annual newt population surveys.

These surveys are vital to the conservation of these endangered creatures. By lending a hand, you’ll be helping to protect the Great Crested Newts for years to come.

A hot drink and bacon butty is included for every volunteer and children are welcome to help too, but must be accompanied by an adult. Opening times and prices here.

Newtopia Day

On Wednesday 30th May we are dedicating a whole day to the Great Crested Newt.

There will be newts on view in tanks for you to see up close and rangers on hand to answer any questions. You’ll be shown the newts holding territory in our sunken garden pond.

For the children, there will be amphibian crafts galore to get stuck into and take home. Opening times and price here.
