Orange tree embroidery

Celebrating the skill of embroidery

The Orange tree embroidery by May Morris is one of the treasures featured in the book, 125 Treasures from the Collections of the National Trust. This embroidered hanging in soft coloured silks on linen is displayed in the Parlour and depicts a simple orange tree, with roses climbing up its slender trunk. New displays at Bateman's reveal more about the embroidery and explain how the National Trust looks after textiles for the future.

Pull on your wellies and follow in Rudyard Kipling’s footsteps with a winter walk around the fields, woods and hills of the Bateman’s estate. Walk leaflets can be picked up from Visitor Reception.

Winter in the garden at Bateman's

Nature may be resting, but there is beauty to be found in the sculptural forms of the skeleton trees, splashes of colour from winter flowers and a sense of peace in the sleeping garden. The winter landscapes reveal the structure of the garden that Kipling created at Bateman's and capture views that can only be enjoyed at this time of year.
