Blackberry and Apple Crumble

When the blackberries are ripe, there are plenty to go round. Often the juiciest are found where they get plenty of sunshine. Take them home and make something delicious.

  • Cooking time 40 to 50 minutes (cooking time)
  • Serves 6


  • 125g butter (keep it cold in the fridge before you start cooking)
  • 25g porridge oats
  • 250g plain flour
  • 100g Brown sugar
  • 4 apples (eating apples are fine)
  • 500g Blackberries


  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/gas mark 6
  2. Cut the cold butter into cubes
  3. Put the flour and butter into a large mixing bowl. Using your hands rub them together intil they become fine crumbs with no lumps of butter left
  4. Take one tablespoon of the brown sugar and set it to one side in a bowl or cup
  5. add the rest of the sugar and the porridge oats, mix them in with the crumbly flour and butter
  6. Peel and core the apples, slice thinly
  7. Put the apples and blackberries into a baking dish (around 20 x 25cm) sprinkle with the sugar you put aside earlier
  8. Cover the fruit with the crumble mixture
  9. bake in the oven for 40 to 50 minutes

Serve with custard, cream or ice cream.
