Meet the volunteers: Keith Jones
Room Guide, Plas Newydd
Without them we wouldn't be able to look after all our special places, so this Volunteers' Week we decided to get to know them a little better. Meet Keith Jones...
What you do in your role:
Greet visitors, hopefully with a smile, and answer any questions or inform them of things of interest in the room.
How long have you been volunteering?
It will be 8 years in September.
Why do you volunteer?
My wife told me to! Also, I find it interesting meeting people and sharing my knowledge of Plas Newydd
Do you volunteer anywhere else?
No, haven’t got the time
Coffee or tea?
" "...the Careers master at school told me to stop day dreaming.""
Tell us something about your background
Was a Registered Nurse (both General and Psychiatric fields), ending my career as a Hospital Manager and Quality Facilitator. I was a Captain in the Army for 5 years. Like the theatre, eating, military history and messing about with computers. Listening to music and playing the piano very badly.
If a film was made of your life – who would play you?
Someone fat and bald, or Brad Pitt, if available.
Tell us something that nobody at the NT knows about you.
I wrote a book about the Penley Polish Hospital, my only, very small, claim to fame. When a student, I was a retained fireman.
When you were a child, what did you want to be and why?
Usual things – astronaut, fireman (see above) scientist, international playboy (the Careers master at school told me to stop day dreaming)
Which do you prefer: A good book or good film?
Always a good book. But I watch a lot of movies.
Who’s your hero?
My wife, Joyce. If pushed, Winston Churchill.
