Introducing Peter and Rebecca at Standen

Rapture & Wright at Standen

Since 2004, Peter Thwaites and Rebecca Aird have run one of the few remaining British artisan studios to design and handprint their own range of fabrics and wallpapers. By adapting age old techniques in clever ways they have developed a worldwide following for their designs, many of which are available in bespoke variations. Their experimentation with print techniques is not limited to paper and textiles. Past commissions have included rooms decorated with oxidised copper and verre eglomise.

Their background

After studying illustration at Art College, Peter shared a studio in Glasgow with fabric design duo Timorous Beasties. It was here that he caught the bug for screen printing. For 15 years he also worked on film and television set design and with interior designers worldwide, creating exotic murals and wall finishes.

Rebecca worked as a leading packaging designer with clients such as Shell, GSK and Cadburys.

Artisans at heart

They dreamt of turning their brimming portfolio of patterns, designed over the years, into a collection of fabrics and wallpapers. Ignoring the trend to "off shore" production and idealistically confident that they could save the dwindling British textile industry by following the example of heroes such as William Morris, they built a hand printing table in a leaky barn and sought out the best suppliers across the British Isles.

Voted one of the Sunday Times top 30 Designer Makers, Peter and Rebecca make fabric and wallpapers the hard way. Using traditional hand printing techniques and small scale, in house production, they create designs that are an antidote to an outsourced, mass-produced, impersonal world. From the outset Rebecca and Peter have tracked down some of the best British suppliers, working closely with them to create fabrics and wallpapers that both suit their traditional way of printing and provide clients with the highest quality product.
