Mr X Stitch at Standen
*This exhibition has now finished* Fresh from the BBC’s MAKE! Craft Britain, Mr X Stitch is bringing his revolutionary embroidered designs to Standen. Jamie “Mr X Stitch” Chalmers is one of the world’s most well-known male embroiderers, an internationally exhibited textile artist and curator. His fresh and sometimes subversive work proves that this humble craft is alive and kicking and not limited to images of cute kittens and country cottages. See the exhibition from Saturday 1 September until Sunday 11 November 2018.
In September 2018 Jamie will be bringing his designs to Standen with his exhibition ‘Mr X Stitch Guide to Cross Stitch’ which will chart the craft’s development through time, highlighting why it is still relevant today.
Following on from his exhibition, Jamie Chalmers will also be creating this years' Christmas art installation ‘The Xmas tree at Standen’. Jamie is inviting the local community to help put a personal touch to his 20 foot designer Christmas tree in the courtyard, bringing festive joy and merriment to this late Victorian Arts & Crafts family home.
" It's a real honour for me to work with Standen; the property itself is such a great example of the power and beauty of handicraft and so it’s the perfect venue to bring modern cross stitch to a new audience. I look forward to introducing people to fresh ideas in cross stitch that will prove that it remains a vibrant and exciting art form."
Jamie is looking to work with local community groups in creating bold and colourful baubles to hang on the tree and courtyard. Age, ability and background is no barrier, the only requirement is enthusiasm, an open mind and a sense of adventure. Fans of cross stitch further afield can get involved by downloading patterns available at www.mrxstitch.com/bauble and sending in their baubles to be included in this festive art installation.
