Midsummer garden celebration at Standen

Throughout June at Standen, we will be celebrating the glorious garden and the completion of the Garden Revival. Five years of work and a £0.5million investment, plus many hours of staff and volunteer work have transformed the garden back to how it looked in the 1920s, when Mrs Beale was in full charge of her outdoor domain.

Tours of the Garden

Visitors can choose to join a Garden Tour, taking place every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, to learn about the history of the garden, how the family enjoyed their outdoor space, plus some of the key work that has taken place as part of the Garden Revival.

There will also be the opportunity to tour the garden once the gates are closed, led by Head Gardener, James Masters. It really takes on a different feel after hours, making you feel like a welcome guest of the Beale’s as you stroll around the garden.

Workshops and talks

Others wishing to tap into some of the skills of the garden team at Standen can join a Gardening Workshop. The topics being covered will be learning about growing flowers for cutting, successional plant design, dyeing using plants in the garden or sympathetic garden design for the environment.

For keen photographers, book onto one of the two photography workshops taking place in the garden and learn how to get the best pictures from your digital camera using the garden at Standen as your classroom.

If gardening knowledge is what you need, join us for Standen’s own version of Gardener’s Question Time where after a quick tour of the garden with one of the team, settle down in the Barn Café  with a reviving cup of tea and take advantage of the garden team’s knowledge and experience to solve your gardening dilemmas. Every Friday, we will also be focusing on a different aspect of the garden. Starting in half term with tractors and machinery, the garden team will be on hand twice a day to talk to visitors about tools, techniques, plants, or the revival work that’s taken place and the plants in those areas.

Fancy a bite to eat or something to take home?

The Barn Café will also be offering seasonal produce from the Kitchen Garden on the daily menu and gardening-related gifts will be available to purchase from the shop. Outside in the plant centre, choose a plant from your favourite area of the garden here at Standen.
