See the Xmas Tree by Mr X Stitch at Standen this Christmas

Cross stitch bauble on the Xmas Tree at Standen

Following the success of our decorated tree designed by Timorous Beasties last year, Kaffe Fassett in 2016 and Zandra Rhodes in 2015, Jamie “Mr X Stitch” Chalmers has been working with local communities and members of the public on a collaborative tree installation featuring over 600 cross stitch baubles in the Courtyard at Standen.  See the decorated tree from Saturday 24 November – Sunday 6 January 2019.

" When we launched the Xmas XStitch Bauble project I didn’t know what the response would be, but it’s fair to say that I’m overwhelmed by it. To have received over 600 baubles from an international community of stitchers is truly humbling and I hope that the visitors to Standen will feel the stitchy love that’s been generated by all these wonderful people!"
- Jamie Chalmers

Jamie is one of the world’s most well-known male embroiderers, an internationally exhibited textile artist and curator. His fresh and sometimes subversive work proves that this humble craft is alive and kicking and not limited to images of cute kittens and country cottages.

He invited the local community to help put a personal touch to his 20 foot designer Christmas tree in the courtyard, bringing festive joy and merriment to this late Victorian Arts & Crafts family home.

Jamie worked with local community groups in creating bold and colourful baubles to hang on the tree and courtyard. Age, ability and background was no barrier, the only requirement was enthusiasm, an open mind and a sense of adventure. Fans of cross stitch further afield got involved by downloading a cross stitch pattern from and sending in their baubles to be included in this festive art installation.

" When I found out I could get involved in this year’s project I was thrilled to help out, especially as I am naturally quite artistic and find lots of inspiration in Standen as an Arts and Crafts house. Getting the local community involved in a creative project is a great way for people to meet and socialise in a fun way."
