Spring colour at Standen
Throughout May, spring colour carpets the terraces and borders at Standen and add bursts of colour in floral displays in the house. There will also be tulip themed gifts in the shop, and tulip treats in the café. Until end of May 2019.
Although tulip season is almost over there is plenty of spring colour still to be found at Standen. For 2019 we have expanded the Tulip Festival to include a variety of spring flowers and plants to add colour from March through until June. In addition to 9,000 tulip bulbs there are over 20,000 blooms which will cause the beds to burst with colour including Narcissus, Hyacinth, Fritillaries, Cyclamen and Iris, plus wallflowers, pansies, daisies, forget-me-nots and aubrietia.
See a mixture of rich oranges, purples and blues on the house terrace and pastel shades on the lower terrace. In the courtyard, bright yellows, whites and pinks will brighten up the shaded area and add colour against the house.
The Tropical Beds next to the Main Lawn are more vibrant shades of red, pink and orange whilst the Tea Garden has been crammed full with vivid foliage and flower, creating a lovely space to sit and have a cup of tea.
Over 80 staff and volunteers were involved in planting the bulbs and seeds which took place in November and December last year. Nothing on this scale has ever been done at Standen before, but it is very much influenced by Margaret Beale’s planting of many bedding plants and bulbs, particularly during the 1920s.
