Standen House & Garden in West Sussex has created their own Christmas tradition by inviting artists and designers to put their own touch on a 20ft Christmas tree in the courtyard. See who has decorated the tree in the past and find out more about this years' tree...

Jamie Chalmers aka Mr X Stitch

2018 - The Xmas Tree by Mr X Stitch

One man, one tree and a community of stitchers have come together this Christmas to produce a showstopping 'Xmas Tree' bringing mirth and merriment to Standen. Jamie “Mr X Stitch” Chalmers, one of the world’s most well-known male embroiderers, has been working with local communities and members of the public on a collaborative tree featuring over 600 cross stitched baubles.

2017 - Timorous Beasties

Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons, the designers behind Timorous Beasties created a striking signature tree in the courtyard. Using their unique style the decorated tree celebrated the house’s cultural heritage and the Beale family’s love of Arts & Crafts. Paul and Alistair’s bespoke design offers a nod to Standen’s beautiful collections of patterned wallpaper and textiles.

Designer Kaffe Fassett makes finishing touches to the Winter Tree at Standen

2016 - Kaffe Fassett

Kaffe created a signature tree in the courtyard, adorned with colourful handmade decorations in contrast to the rooms in the house which were decorated to evoke festivities throughout the decades in the Beale family home. There was also the opportunity to preview a small number of Kaffe’s textiles within the house prior to his 2017 exhibition at Standen.

2015 - Zandra Rhodes & Andrew Logan

Dame Zandra Rhodes and Andrew Logan, two acclaimed icons from the world of British fashion and art, collaborated with the staff and volunteers of Standen to create a unique, contemporary Winter Tree in 2015. Traditional paper chains, baubles and wreaths were given a 21st-century twist, with both Zandra’s iconic patterns and her neon colour pallet on display. Zandra and Andrew’s use of recycled materials and hand painting where inspired by the hand crafted ethos of the Arts & Crafts at Standen.
