With several orchards across the estate at Stowe, we certainly have an annual bounty of fruit. With over 50 old English varieties of trees to care for, we care for our orchard and fruit trees at Stowe all year round. It is a delight to see the fruit they produce each Autumn.
Celebrating apples at Stowe
With a historic Orchard in the garden, and other fruit trees around the New Inn, car park and Farmhouse Garden areas, there is lots of fruit come harvest time at Stowe. During September we harvest the apples at Stowe by hand. You will be able to pick bags of apples up in our shop, for a donation. Alongside this we usually have other produce such sloes to bring homemade recipes to life.
Looking after our Orchard
Historic maps show that the Orchard was in the Grecian Valley in 1749, and our work continues to look after and restore our historic orchard. It is a beautiful spot, just off Laurel Terrace in the Grecian Valley, and is well worth seeking out.
Last year the team built a bug hotel, to really encourage the bugs and insects pollinate the trees in this area. You will find this just tucked away at the back of the Orchard in a quiet spot.
Something to whet your appetite
To make use of so much produce, our cafe team are on hand to delight your taste buds with some harvest treats. A firm favourite is our Stowe apple cake, freshly baked here at Stowe. Head out on an autumn walk round the garden to build up your appetite and round of your visit with a visit to the cafe.
In the shop
Allow yourself some retail therapy and look through the seasonal gifts in the shop. From delicate scarves to acorn shaped bird feeders there's a wide autumn range of items to choose from. For our top product pick, we recommend choosing from the children's nature inspired books which vary from topics on caring for the environment to the changing seasons that tell their stories with wonderful illustration and imagination.
