Collecting & Legacy

Lord Fairhaven's Pagoda Clock

Discover the collecting habits of a twentieth century millionaire in our Collecting & Legacy exhibition which runs until 30 October.

Personal Taste

Tastefully filling every room, Lord Fairhaven's collection reveals his interests, influenced by an upbringing in America and life as a wealthy English bachelor. Favoured subjects included royalty, horseracing and history. English Regency silver, clocks and statuary sit comfortably with commissioned work, including tapestries and paintings.

The market was flooded with treasures from country house collections suffering from the post-war recession. By forming close links with trusted art dealers and relying on the advice of friends in the art worls, he was able to collect quality items at pace.

Lord Fairhaven's collection was referred to in top contemporary publications and he was often asked to lend to exhibitions. Today, we still get regular loan reguests for items such as the Constable sketch of Waterloo Bridge.
