Go wild at Chirk Castle this summer

We have plenty of activities happening at Chirk Castle to keep you and the whole family entertained this summer. Whether you are looking for historical re-enactment events, regular opportunities to get active and enjoy the estate, or kid friendly fun for the summer holidays, we have plenty of each through July and August.

Below is a list of activities and events taking place at Chirk Castle over the summer holidays. We also have our garrison guards who can help you try on arms and armour and find out more about the castle's medieval past, regular inside and courtyard tours, special kids trails through the State Rooms, and oversized games and a special catering offer in the gardens.

Chirk Castle summer 2018

  • Every day: enjoy our Storybook trail Normal through the Pleasure Ground Wood. Can you find all the animals and help the Frog Prince to remember his name? Normal admission applies.
     
  • Tuesdays: join our Ranger team for a guided bat walk to learn all about Chirk Castle's special nighttime tennants. Pre-book via our website. £5 per person. Places limited.
     
  • Tuesdays: Join our volunteer Nordic Walking group to get active and explore the Chirk estate. Free. Please call 01691 777 701 to let them know you are coming.
     
  • Saturdays: Join our volunteer Beginner Running club to get started exploring the estate, and perhaps you'll soon be taking on our 10k run! Free. Please call 01691 777 701 to let them know you are coming.
  • 28 & 29 July: Civil war re-enactment weekend. Explore the Civil War camp, see activities, and find more about Chirk Castle in the Civil War and our unique collection of muskets. Watch live musket firing on the meadow. Normal admission applies.
     
  • 31 July: Marvellous mini-beasts. Join us to explore the miniature world of marvellous mini beasts! Pre-book via website. Places limited. Normal admission applies.
     
  • 1 August: Natural art. Get creative and go wild this summer with some natural art. Free. Meet on the meadow in front of the castle.
     
  • 2 August: Buzzing about bees. To celebrate becoming a certified bee-friendly site we’re going wild for bees this summer at Chirk Castle! Free. Meet in the Kitchen Garden.
     
  • 4 & 5 August: Mortimer’s Fortress. Medieval re-enactment event with the Marcher Freemen and friends. Explore the medieval camp, enjoy have-a-go archery, dress the Knight, tourney battle and kids activities.Normal admission applies.
     
  • 7 August: Pond gazing. Gaze into the depths of our pond to discover a secret underwater world. Our pond is full of life, all you need to do is take a closer look! Meet at the pond. Normal admission applies.
     
  • 7 August: The Princess and the Giant: outdoor theatre in the garden. Filled with music, puppetry and wonderful characters, this family show is one not to be missed! Based on the Children's book by Caryl Hart, illustrated by Sarah Warburton. See website for booking details.
     
  • 8 August: Walk on the wild side. Join us on a guided walk through our woodlands and gardens specially designed for kids. Pre-book via website. Free.
     
  • 9 August: Bug hotel building. Help us to create a home for bugs in our Kitchen Garden! Free. Meet in the Kitchen Garden.

  • 18 August: Observation beehive show-and-tell. Meet John Beavan, the estate bee-keeper, and learn all about his craft and his bees. Free. Drop-in to see us at Home Farm.
     
  • 19 August: Falconry in the gardens. Relive history at Chirk Castle with falconry in the picturesque gardens. Watch a flying display, and take the opportunity to get closer to these amazing birds. Normal admission applies.

A classic retelling of St. George and the Dragon from the author of The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame.The Reluctant Dragon is a funny, touching and enchanting story of bravery, friendship and derring-do.
