Make the most of the summer holidays outdoors

Children playing in the summer

Summer holidays are the best excuse to be outdoors, whether it's playing games, out looking for wildlife or enjoying the warmer weather. We've got plenty of things for all the family to while away the days.

Adventures big and small

Outdoor explorers of all ages will have great fun discovering the gardens and parkland on one of our trails, available everyday throughout the holidays. In the gardens, take the Bumble Bess trail while in the park pick up a special guide to see what butterflies, bees and dragonflies you can spot.

All abuzz

Make a bee-line for the bee safaris and get stuck in with other bee-related activity taking place on certain days - our friends from the Bee Conservation Trust will be coming along to help out.

Gardener days

For greenfingered types of the younger variety, there are special gardener days when there's the chance to learn from the gardens team what a gardener does at Hardwick.

Bubble fans might like to help us with a bit of pest-control in the gardens - come and wave a bubble wand to keep those aphids at bay.

There will be opportunities to taste some of Hardwick’s produce with the gardeners, and learn more about how we use Hardwick’s harvest too.

Ranger days

Learn about Hardwick’s outdoors team and get hands on with activities. Throughout the holidays we've ranger days and tractor days, including celebrating World Ranger Day. These days are a chance to find out what the rangers do to care for the estate, trying out some of their equipment and perhaps a go on the ranger’s tractor - they might even let you beep the horn.

Summer of Sport

Over the six weeks of summer holdays we are opening up the North Orchard (next to the Hall - what used to be the old car park) as a space for all sorts of sporting activity that everyone can come and have a go at. Amongst the pickings will be rounders, badminton, tennis and football.

Picnic time

There are lots of spots around Hardwick that make for a great picnic. Have a read of our top ten picks or search out your favourite spot. In the stableyard there's plenty of space to spread out and lots of games for all ages to enjoy.

Take a look at the What's On section for more detail and timings. Standard admission applies.
