Treasures trail at Chartwell 2021

A butterfly in the gardens at Chartwell, a National Trust property in Kent

Join us this summer at Chartwell for a new family adventure! Explore different treasures and hidden secrets waiting to be found all around Chartwell with some extra activities to finish at home as well.

Friday 23rd July – Wednesday 1st September; 10am – 5pm (Last entry 4.30pm)

Follow the numbered route all around the Chartwell gardens to discover some of Chartwell’s classic features such as the Golden Orfe pond, as well as some more out-of-sight secrets like the story of the original Chart Well.

Pick an activity booklet up from our Visitor Centre on your arrival to start the trail. Everything you need is in the booklet – as well as some extra activities to complete as you head round such as a butterfly spotter and some more to complete at home too.

Don’t forget to collect your prize from our Visitor Centre at the end!

How much?

Hunts will be £2.00 per person (including National Trust members). Normal site admission applies.

Accessibility

The trail is aimed at children aged 3 +.

Buggy friendly. Points 3 and 4 are accessed via stairs but can easily be skipped if needed. Please ask in our Visitor Centre for any further information on accessible routes.

Some of the wild play areas in the woodland are up steep inclines, with rough pathways. There is a play area just beyond the swimming pool that is fully accessible.

Family facilities at Chartwell

Baby changing facilities can be found by the visitor welcome centre, the toilets behind the shop and also just beyond the croquet lawn in the garden. There's a picnic area with tables adjacent to the overflow car park and you're welcome to bring a blanket and picnic on the slopes by the lakes. Please note scooters and trikes are not suitable at Chartwell.

Skip the queues by dining al fresco

Our café can get very busy during school holiday weekends. Queues are to be expected during these peak times.

Why not bring along a picnic instead? Grab a blanket, find a spot on the slopes by the lakes and enjoy the view whilst you eat. You can always grab something from our café before heading out (not forgetting the ice cream of course!).

Peak visiting times

We are expecting to be very busy here at Chartwell over the summer holidays, and so ask a bit of extra patience and for all visitors to please be kind to our staff and volunteers. Please come prepared to queue, but as always, we will aim to welcome everyone as fast as we can do so safely.

To avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting on a weekday for a quieter day.

We have now moved away from the booking system so there is no need to book either your visit or for the trail.
