Taking care of our countryside

Sun rise at Lantivet Bay, Cornwall

The National Trust Act in 1907 intended to preserve not only historic houses, but also 'lands, their natural aspect, features, and animal and plant life' for the benefit of the nation.

We look after 254,000 hectares of countryside, including 65,000 hectares of areas of outstanding natural beauty and over 750 miles of coastline.

Our aim is to restore the countryside making it again healthy, beautiful, and rich in wildlife.  We want to make space for nature on all our land.

We hope that as you fall in love with these outdoor places, and find your favourite bits of your local countryside, you will support us, and help to look after these places.  This means we can make sure that you have, and will always have, access to them.
