Increasing access at Blickling Estate

Wheelchair and electric mobility scooters at Hidcote

With the launch of our installation ‘The Word Defiant!’ in May, we’ve been opening up opportunities for people who need extra support, to ensure that as many people as possible are able to experience the art. Take a look at what you’ll find at Blickling Estate this summer to help make your visit more accessible.

Mobile changing places

8 May, 12 June, 10 July, 14 August, 11 September

Between May and September, we’re thrilled that Mobiloo will be joining us on site on the second Tuesday of every month.

Mobiloo is a specially adapted van, with an accessible toilet, an adult-sized changing bench, a hoist and a member of the Mobiloo team on hand to support you. The van will be based in the disabled car park area in the farmyard, near the bookshop, plant centre, stamp shop and farmyard café and within easy reach of the house and gardens.

The Word Defiant! Braille guide

As you enter the house, there are information sheets available in Braille as well as a translation of the bookmark given out at visitor reception on arrival. Please speak to one of our volunteers who will be happy to provide you with both as you explore the house.

Experiencing the installations

We’re fortunate to have a lift in the house which means anyone with mobility needs can access both the ground and first floor; however, the basement is not accessible. With this in mind, we have produced an accessible video, following the route down the steps to the basement area, taking you to 'The Word Redacted' and 'The Word Burned' installations (available from mid June).

The video is available to view on a screen in the Serving Room, once you’ve gone through the Dining Room. Please speak to a volunteer on hand who will guide you through. For a full experience there are headphones available so that you can hear the sounds that accompany some of the installations. But you’re welcome to watch the video without sound if you prefer.

All seven installations created by award-winning Theatre Company Les Enfants Terribles, offer a tactile, sensory experience, so you're welcome to get up close to each one, touch some of the open pages of the books and then create your own response to the art in our Reflection Room at the end.
