Wholemeal scones

This easy recipe will show you how to make 8 of Houghton Mill's delicious wholemeal scones.

  • Houghton Mill flour (or other wholemeal flour) 56g
  • Self-raising flour 394g
  • Butter 112g
  • Caster sugar 112g
  • Sultanas 112g
  • Baking powder 2 heaped tsp
  • Milk and water to mix Equal parts


Make 8 large scones

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 190°C (fan) or 210°C (regular), gas mark 5.
  2. Grease a baking tray
  3. Melt the butter
  4. Sieve together the flour, sugar and baking powder into a bowl
  5. Make a space in the centre of the mixture and pour in the melted butter
  6. Mix it all together using your hands or a flat bladed knife
  7. Add in the sultanas
  8. Use just enough milk and water, adding a little at a time, to make the scone mixture hold together without crumbling (not too much or the mixture will become very sticky)
  9. Gently form the mixture into a flat round shape, patting it flat using your hands
  10. Cut into rounds and transfer to the baking tray
  11. Place in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown on top
  12. Enjoy eating yummy warm scones with jam and cream
