Step back in time at one of the places we care for and experience a historic Christmas. You’ll be thrown right back to the festivities of the time at historic places to visit at Christmas. You can see houses decked out with Georgian, Victorian, 1930s, 1970s and 1980s inspired decorations. You never know, you might even meet a historical character on your visit.

East of England
Lots of Christmas houses will be decorated this year. At Oxburgh Hall you can see beautiful decorations.

Christmas in the East of England 

One of the highlights of the year has to be visiting Christmas houses in East Anglia. Experience 'Tinsel and Tweed' at Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire, and celebrate Christmas as Lord Fairhaven would have done in the 1960s. Don't miss the showstopper tree in the Tapestry Hall on your visit. Want to travel even further back in time? Immerse yourself in a Victorian Christmas at Blickling in Norfolk, where the rooms will be decked out with festive decorations.

London and the South East

Christmas in London and the South East 

There are some wonderful stately homes decorated for Christmas in London and the South East. Travel back in time to an Edwardian Christmas at Scotney Castle, where you can find traditional decorations and glittering Christmas trees surrounded by presents wrapped and ready for the big day. You can also discover Christmas through the ages at Petworth, where different rooms will be decked out with festive styles from Georgian and Victorian times and the 1940s.


Historical festivities at Standen House

Take a trip through time in this behind-the-scenes video of Standen House, West Sussex, where the staff and curators were influenced by the arts and crafts movement in the decorations they used for Christmas in 2020. Christmas trees were placed throughout the house to tell the story of the Beale family, who once lived here.

Dance the night away at Hanbury Hall in Worcestershire which will be dressed top to bottom in 70s- and 80s-inspired Christmas decorations. Celebrate Christmas the Victorian way at Wightwick Manor in Wolverhampton, which will be decorated in traditional festive finery. You might even meet a character or two from history.

North East

Experience Christmas houses in the North East. At Cragside in Northumberland, see Victorian decorations and explore festively decorated rooms inspired by different Christmas songs. You can also see the large Christmas tree at Wallington in Northumberland, and you can even help out the team with some decorating tasks.

North West

Warm up indoors at spellbinding places to visit at Christmas across the North West. Enjoy some festive cheer at places like Lyme, where the rooms will be decked out for Christmas, and peek through the windows of Speke Hall to see silhouettes of the Tudor residents celebrating Yuletide.

Northern Ireland

Explore houses decked out for Christmas in Northern Ireland. At Castle Ward in County Down, experience the house dressed in tableau for an evocative 18th-century Christmas. Christmas in the South West 

Places across the South West have been busy decking the halls and getting their houses decorated for Christmas.
